Everest, Lhotse and Ama Dablam seen through the pines at Syangboche

Hotel Everest View & Syangboche

Tea on a terrace facing Everest

On a pine-covered ridge above Namche, at about 3,880 m, Hotel Everest View was opened in 1971 by a Japanese entrepreneur so that guests could see the world’s highest mountain from their rooms. Its stone terrace looks straight up the Imja valley to Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse and Ama Dablam, with Thamserku and Kangtega to the right.

You do not have to stay to enjoy it. The walk up from Namche past the grass airstrip of Syangboche (about 3,780 m) is the park’s best-known half-day hike, the standard acclimatisation outing for trekkers, and the turnaround point of most short “Everest view” treks. Helicopter tours from Kathmandu commonly stop here for breakfast.

What to see and do: Hotel Everest View & Syangboche

Have tea on the terrace

Non-residents are welcome on the terrace for drinks and meals. Come early: the peaks are usually clearest before mid-morning, and cloud often fills the valley after noon.

Pick out the peaks

From left to right: Taboche, the Nuptse–Lhotse wall with the dark summit pyramid of Everest behind it, Lhotse, the unmistakable Ama Dablam, then Kangtega and Thamserku. See our guide to the peaks of the park.

Look for wildlife on the way

The slopes between Namche and Syangboche are among the best places in the park to see Himalayan tahr grazing and the iridescent Himalayan monal, Nepal’s national bird, especially early in the day.

Continue to Khumjung

A path drops from the hotel through juniper and rhododendron to Khumjung in 20–30 minutes, making a satisfying loop back to Namche.

Getting to Hotel Everest View & Syangboche

  • On foot from Namche: 1.5–2.5 hours up, about 440 m of ascent, on a clear path via Syangboche.
  • On a short trek: five-day itineraries fly to Lukla, walk to Namche in two days, visit the ridge and return. See treks and routes.
  • By helicopter: tours and hotel transfers land at Syangboche or near the hotel. Guests who fly directly to this altitude are at real risk of altitude sickness; a slow approach on foot is safer.

Visitor tips

  • Go on your acclimatisation day in Namche, then sleep back down in the town.
  • Carry a wind-proof layer — the ridge is exposed even in sunshine.
  • If Everest is hidden when you arrive, wait: views often open and close within minutes.
  • Room rates are high by Khumbu standards and vary by season; check current prices on our where to stay page.
