Sagarmatha Treks & Tours

From a one-hour mountain flight to a three-week circuit of the high passes — real, bookable ways into the park.

There is no road into Sagarmatha National Park. You reach it on foot, by small plane to Lukla, or by helicopter — which is why most visitors book at least part of their trip as a package with a guide, flights and lodges arranged.

We have grouped the best current options on GetYourGuide by the kind of trip they make. Every listing is a real product with live availability; where a tour is new and has no reviews yet, we say so. For help choosing between routes, read treks and routes compared, and for a ranked shortlist see our best Sagarmatha tours.

Before you book a trek: check what the price includes — Lukla flights, park permits, meals and porters are sometimes extra — and count the acclimatisation days. A cheaper, faster itinerary is rarely the better one at this altitude.

Good to know

Booking tours: common questions

Do I need a guide in Sagarmatha National Park?

Nepal announced in 2023 that foreign trekkers must be accompanied by a licensed guide in most trekking areas. In the Khumbu the local municipality has applied its own system and independent trekkers have continued to be admitted, but the situation can change. A guide adds safety at altitude and is strongly advisable on the high passes; check the latest before you travel.

Are Lukla flights included in trek packages?

Sometimes. Packages described as “from Kathmandu” usually include them; those “from Lukla” do not. Read the inclusions list — the return flight is a significant cost.

Is a helicopter tour safe at that altitude?

Flights are operated by licensed companies and landings at high points are kept short (typically 10–15 minutes) because you arrive unacclimatised. Tours are weather-dependent and may be rescheduled or re-routed; anyone with heart or lung conditions should ask a doctor first.

What is the difference between a mountain flight and a helicopter tour?

A mountain flight is a one-hour trip in a small airliner from Kathmandu that flies along the Himalaya and returns without landing. A helicopter tour flies into the park itself, usually lands at one or two points and costs several times more.

Can I cancel if the weather is bad?

Many GetYourGuide products offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure, and operators normally reschedule or refund flights cancelled for weather. Check the conditions of the specific tour.
